Why The Sports Deals exists

Sporting goods is one of the great consumer-retail head-fakes: the gear that performs the best is rarely the gear with the biggest marketing budget, and the prices on the gear that does perform are wildly inconsistent depending on where, when, and how you buy it.

We started The Sports Deals because the people we knew who shopped the smartest — coaches, trainers, the parent who’s outfitted four kids through a decade of travel sports — all had the same playbook: wait for end-of-season clearance, follow a few specific brands, ignore the headline-grabbing collabs. We wanted to package that playbook into a store.

So we did. The Sports Deals carries a curated, opinionated assortment of pro-grade gear, marked down through direct-from-brand relationships and our own buying scale. We don’t carry everything. We carry the things we’d recommend to a friend.


How we pick what we carry

Three filters, in order:

  1. Performance: Does the gear do what it claims to do? We pressure-test products with our ambassador network — runners, lifters, climbers, weekend pickleball obsessives — before we list them.
  2. Value: Is the price actually fair? We won’t carry a product just because we can get it cheap if the underlying gear isn’t good. We won’t carry a great product at a markup that doesn’t pass our internal “would I tell my brother to buy this” test.
  3. Sustainability and labor: We prefer brands with disclosed manufacturing locations, third-party labor certifications (Fair Wear, SA8000), and recyclable or recycled materials. It’s not a hard filter — but it’s a tiebreaker, and over time it shapes what we stock.

What we don’t do

  • We don’t run “compare-at” prices that exist only in our spreadsheet. The number with a strikethrough is the actual recent price somewhere reputable.
  • We don’t pay for fake reviews. We use a verified-purchase review system and we don’t seed it.
  • We don’t pretend to be the “everything store.” We carry a few hundred SKUs across a few dozen sports. If you need something obscure, we’ll tell you where to get it.
